This is one of the things I've been doing during my reading week; the only creative thing really. The rest of the time has been pretty much filled with school-related things still. At least it's a bit of a break from all the science and medical terminology swirling in my head.
I'm not usually big on drawing people, or at least realistic looking people, so I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. There's a bit more I could do to improve it I'm sure, but I was at the point where I felt if I did do anything more, I might take it too far and then ruin it. I used my scanner to get it onto my computer (lighting wasn't working well with the camera), which explains the grayness of the background. There's actually more white space around it in the original piece, but my scanner is only like 11" x 8.5". All this I'm sure you needed to know :P

Kris Kuksi's sculptures leave me speechless and amazed. They could be considered a bit grotesque and horrifying (I think that's the point), but the amount of detail contained in them is incredible! And the more you look at them, the more you see. I think hours could be spent looking at just a single sculpture. Okay, maybe not hours, but A LOT of time. I have spent hours on his website, which has great images of all his sculptures, including close-ups to show all the detail. He also has some pretty awesome paintings and drawings. This is just a sample of some of his work, but it really doesn't do it justice. I would highly recommend that you check out kuksi.com.

Don Kenn Gallery

The Don Kenn Gallery actually belongs to, or is John Kenn. His artwork is fantastical, dark, and imaginative. The style is kind of along the lines of Edward Gorey... finely detailed and textured, but with a lot more monsters and strange creatures. The really neat part is pretty much all his work is just done on post-it notes! If you like what you see here, more can be viewed on his blog.

I'm horrible at making decisions. I think I put way too much thought into my options. I just wrote a very long entry, which I've just erased because it was my whole thought process of what I should do and it was verrrrrryyyyyy long. I need to make a decision between the following:

1. Continue the veterinary technician program that I'm in right now, even though I can't see myself having a career with animals in the long-term, despite my love for them. However, I could continue to pursue my artistic interests and perhaps succeed as a professional artist. This was kind of my thinking when I decided to enter the vet tech program. It might not be what I truly want to do, but it would be something I at least enjoy enough and allows me time and energy for my art, which then might take over as my main career.

2. Apply to and hopefully be accepted into the Illustration program at Sheridan even though it's four years at a total of about $32,000, and it's not exactly the most stable job. If money and security weren't an issue, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I think I might regret it if I don't at least apply and show my portfolio though. I think I've considered applying every year for the past 6 or so years. Even though it takes more than an education to be an illustrator (lots don't even need that), I think some good connections and experiences would be gained from attending.

3. Return to my old ad agency job and work on my art/illustration on the side. This was also my thinking when I first landed the job, but it didn't quite pan out, since it kind of sucked the life out of me. So, I could try to find another job that doesn't suck the life out of me, or even possibly just take a chunk of time to dedicate solely to art without any other income.

Those are the basics. There's so much more though. Basically, I think I need to get some self-esteem and not be such a people-pleaser (specifically parents). If that happens, I think I'll have a way easier time making decisions. Sigh.

Self-taught artist, Angelina Wrona likes to draw sad, lost looking girls with rabbits on their heads. A bit odd, but I like it. Actually, the subject matter is much more varied than that, although they pretty much all do feature slightly creepy, pouty girls with big eyes. The two pieces below are my favourites. Bunny Attack

This series is some of my own work, and I hate to say, quite a few years old now. The basic story behind it is a girl and her bunny friend live happily on an island together. One day, bunny friend sees some others seemingly like himself on the mainland, but they are evil bunnies (as all bunnies actually are). They journey across the bridge connected to the island, surround the girl, attack her, and leave her on the island with her now-evil bunny friend. Whether she is dead with bunny standing over her in triumph or whether she is just unconscious and being protected by her friend who still has a little bit of good in him, is a mystery.

I've always meant to flesh out the story and develop the characters a bit more, but it's been a few years now, and still nothing has happened to put it on paper (a lot of thought has gone on in my head though). I kind of wanted a more eloquent title for this series too, but "Bunny Attack" is all I've ever come up with. Anyway, it's not too late to get started on taking this series further so I guess I could say it's still a work in progress. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. In the meantime, hope you enjoy what there is so far.

Arcade Fire: The Wilderness Downtown

Oh, Arcade Fire, how I love you. Words cannot describe. Really, I've been sitting here for 5 minutes now trying to come up with the next sentence. I think I first heard "Rebellion (Lies)" from Funeral on the radio as one of the rare indie songs that the station played. I can't say I was hooked on them right away, but I was definitely intrigued because it was so different from everything else being played. When I received Funeral as a gift and the first soft notes of the piano from "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" began, I was in love. I don't know what it is about their songs, but I'm filled with so much emotion when I hear them. They're one of the rare groups whose music can actually make me cry for no apparent reason. I saw them in Toronto last August (already a year ago...sad), and I was the odd one out who in a sea of people moving to the music, pretty much stayed completely still the whole time. I just wanted to take it all in without any distraction so I could remember it all and go back to it in my mind whenever I want. It was just so amazing.
Anyway, "The Wilderness Downtown" is an interactive film, which uses Arcade Fire's song "We Used to Wait" off their latest album The Suburbs. I was blown away when I first saw it; it's very cool. I'd recommend that you use Google Chrome as your browser since it was made with it in mind. You won't be able to get the speed and other capabilities required for the film with other browsers. They'll still work somewhat, but it's a bit less impressive. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Kozyndan's Seasons of the Bunny

Kind of like a hidden objects picture or whatever they're called (anyone remember Highlights magazine where you had to find a list of objects hidden in a seemingly normal picture?). Maybe not so hidden, but still subtle. This series started with "Uprisings", the bunny wave, which kind of became Kozyndan's calling card. It's not indicative of the art they (it's a husband and wife team) produce though, which covers a wide range of subject matter and uses a variety of media, from traditional to digital. These are my favourites though. "Uprisings" hangs on my studio a.k.a. corner-area-of-the-living-room wall. Check out what else Kozyndan have to offer on their site.

Creepy and cute. A combination of those two usually produces very interesting, and usually kind of twisted work, which is right up my alley. The paintings of Mark Ryden are no exception, although I wouldn't use just those words to describe his art. "Creepy" and "cute", though appropriate, are too simple and don't begin to describe the complexity of his work. I won't go into too much detail and let the work speak for itself. Welcome to my blog, which I'll call site from this point on (blog sounds like a dumpy monster). It's actually been in existence for a while, but was pretty much dormant. And it looked kind of blah. So I decided to revamp it and hopefully there will be more frequent and interesting contributions.
As noted in the description at the top, this site is a random collection of art, music, design, a few cute animals and some ramblings (the first of which is this entry). Basically it's a collection of anything I'm passionate about, that's inspiring, or just plain neat. My interests go beyond the list above so I may go beyond those limits sometimes, but I'll try to keep it somewhat focused. Even within the confines of that list I can go all over the place, which is why the word "random" is included. It justifies the scatteriness of it all (yes, "scatteriness" is a word; it's just not in the dictionary).
I decided to start this random collection just as a way to keep track of all the cool, creative stuff I come across (mainly on the internet) and to share it with anyone who comes across this site. I also might use it to showcase some of my own art; drawrings mostly. Also, it provides an escape from my less than inspiring day job (although that's coming to a close... yay!), and my possible return to school (to be a vet tech... I know, what am I thinking :S). It might provide an escape for you too from whatever awful work and/or life hell you're in.
So hopefully this isn't the first and last entry here. I'll try to update it weekly. I'd prefer daily, but I have to be realistic. Bye for now!
